Invisible Conversations

Belinda Von mengerson’s work highlights the role of textile within a certain domestic space of a table where conversations, dialogues and discussions take place. The place that is governed by a textile becomes an intimate space for people to come together, have a meal and discuss things at the table. The concept  of Dastarkhwan (floor cloth) echoes similarities of coming together for a meal. The term itself means a generously laid out meal but most commonly used for the cloth spread on floor for the spread. However within modernism, where individualism is much more on the forefront, this sort of activity seems to have faded. As someone belonging to that culture, and seeing the desecration of that sort of congregational space, for me Belinda’s work highlights that very essence. Taking the floor cloth or dastarkhwan, the textile throw works as a centre piece of sorts, derived from the existing imagery that relates it to it, while having space for it to exist in a contemporary aura
